NORTHERN NEW YORK SECTION WEBPAGE
Hello to all and welcome Spring!
With the beginning of warmer weather we are all looking forward to getting outdoors. Some of us will be planting seeds for our flower or vegetable garden and some will be planting aluminum and copper for our antenna farm. Others may be doing both. Remember, be safe out there no matter what you are doing. Think it through before you act. Don't let carelessness add your name to the SK list in QST.
Thinking about spring - How are your clubs? No, not your driver, putter and sand wedge, your Radio Clubs. Please keep me informed about your groups activities, plans and accomplishments. Also get the information to our section PIO, Rich Burns. I urge all of you to actively participate in at least one radio club. At least one? Why more than one, you may ask? Because many clubs, although they profess to be "general interest" clubs really cover the gamut of the hobby. Few of us partake in only one aspect of the hobby. Many of us have special interests, be it DXing, Contesting, VHF Weak Signal work, Satellites, EME, RACES/ARES, Digital, ATV or.... Our clubs offer a chance for eye to eye communication, and an opportunity to rejuvinate, not only ourselves, but our hobby. Has your club sponsored a licensing class within the past year? If not, why not? It is not hard to do, particularly with all the assistance available from HQ. The class content is all prepared in the instructors guide. You do not have to be an EE to teach a licensing class. If several folks work together, you don't have to teach the full course yourself. What's that, you don't have time? Many groups have had much success doing one or two weekend classes. If you would like some information regarding the setup and operation of weekend classes our Atlantic Division Staff member Mona, NY7P can provide guidance.
In NNY we have 10 affiliated clubs, zero special service clubs, 304 ARRL members and 1422 licensed hams. I do believe we can do better, in several ways. Specifically, at least 2 clubs come to mind that should qualify as Special Service Clubs and we need more league members and more licensed hams. How are you progressing in your pursuit of my Section Managers' "Christmas in July" Challenge? Remember, that is the challenge I put forth in July 2007 - a gift to the hobby - each of us should make a concerted effort to bring a new person into the amateur radio hobby by 4 July 2008. Envision it: We each Elmer a new operator, from introduction to the hobby, through licensing and getting them on the air - we will double the number of licensed amateurs in NNY, as well as recruiting many for ARRL Membership. The worries about where we will find ops for the next ice storm, blizzard, high water event, tin-man, iron-man, parade, search or white water race will be a thing of the past!
The Atlantic Division Webpage at www.atldiv.org/training has information on various Webinairs. These activities, the brainchild of Bill, our Division Director and Tom, our Vice-Director are excellent education forums, usually lasting about 90 minutes. I urge all Section Staff tp participate and NNY members to sign on to listen and learn. Upcoming are sessions on EMCOMM on 19 April and Public Relations on 24 May.
Join us on Saturday mornings on 3955 KHz at 0900 local for the NNY callup. On the third Saturday of the month, we try it on 5 MHz. If Saturday is no good, try Sunday on 3958 KHz at 0830 local.
Keep any event information coming to myself, Mike O'Dell (for the NNY website) and Rich Burns (PIO)
If you have any concerns, queries, suggestions or comments regarding the ARRL or the hobby in general, please contact me via my e-mail, wb2kld@arrl.org or land line, 518 827 4800 (H, till 9PM) or 518 827 4852 (W). Actually, the land line is preferred since it is easier for me to have a give and take so I am sure and in detail about whatever the subject you present.
If you are not on the section e-mail list, please consider contacting the League to put yourself on it since it is the fastest way for me to get information to the whole section at once. Thanks.

NORTHERN NEW YORK SECTION WEBPAGE
Hello to all and wishes for the best in 2008.
The winter evenings will be a good time to reap the benefits of the past years antenna farm work while enjoying the 160,80,40 or 30 meter activity. The extra shack time will also be an opportunity to experiment with a mode or technique new to you or, figure out what new devices to plant in your antenna farm later in 2008!
Perhaps it sounds lite-hearted but I am serious about this challenge! Please, do not depend on the other guy. We ALL need to take part in this challenge, for the future of our hobby and the health and security of our communities.
Join us on Saturday mornings on 3955 KHz at 0900 local for the NNY callup. On the third Saturday of the month, we try it on 5 MHz. If Saturday is no good, try Sunday on 3958 KHz at 0830 local.

The 5 January meeting to discuss the NNY Hamfest had to be delayed due to illness of one of the key individuals. I will report on the meeting in the next issue of this newsletter. In the mean-time, any input should go to Tom Dick, KF2GC, Co-ordinator or Sanford Baer, KC2IDX, NNYARA President.
If you have any concerns, queries, suggestions or comments regarding the ARRL or the hobby in general, please contact me via my e-mail, wb2kld@arrl.org or land line, 518 827 4800 (H, till 9PM) or 518 827 4852 (W). October the first already! The NNY Section Hamfest and Convention is this coming weekend. Wow -it seems only a short time ago since the last get together at the Horse Showgrounds in Lake Placid. Now that we do not have conflict with HossTraders I hope to see more of you at Lake Placid. It is a great family weekend too. Plenty of things for the non-ham to see, from the Flaming Leaves Festival to Olympic Sports practice sessions - yes - they really do ski jump, using an artifical surface. With frosty fall mornings upon us we are on notice from nature that we had better have our antenna farms, whatever the size, ready to withstand another NNY winter. I know I mentioned it in a recent column, but most of us have procrastinated, didn't we? Check those guy wires. Be sure all lines are properly tensioned and turnbuckles are properly secured against accidental separation. A drop or two of lube on the threads will not hurt either. Verify the integrity of your ground system. Plenty of potential for thunderstorm activity and high winds before the snow flies. For you folks "in the outback" mark your guy-wires well so an errant snow sledder or 4-wheeler doesn't run into them.
I am beginning to hear of some results and response to my Christmas In July Challenge. If you don't recall the details, every one of us should make a vow, between now and our countries next birthday, to bring at least one person into the world of amateur radio. Get them interested, guide them through the licensing process by one-on-one mentoring (or run a class), then help them get on the air, take part in public service events, work DX, participate in contests, do the digital modes, OSCARs' or whatever or where ever interests may take them. Imagine, not having to scramble to find enough operators for the next ice storm, marathon, fly-in or....you name it. We could actually double the amateur radio and ARRL Membership population in under one year! Just picture it - NNY leading the country in amateur radio growth! Maybe Katie Breen will use our example for the next ARRL Membership Campaign! Folks, this is a serious challenge! Please, do not depend on the other guy. We ALL need to take part in this challenge!
Welcome aboard as an ARRL affiliated club to the NCARC!
Join us on Saturday mornings on 3955 KHz at 0900 local for the NNY callup. On the third Saturday of the month, we try it on 5 MHz. If Saturday is no good, try Sunday on 3958 KHz at 0830 local.
Just a reminder: At the NNY meeting in Plattsburg, the group deceided that, in an effort to support emergency communication operations when 80 or 40 Meters don't do the job or VHF doesn't have the range, the NNY Section will make an effort to drill on 60 Meters and hold a net there at least once per month.
This will allow folks in our section to verify that they are operational on these frequencies. Additionally, 60 Meters may well turn out to be "the missing link" for our section, providing coverage from the extremes of our geographic area, allowing the far reaches communications with the State Capitol. It was decided that the third Saturday of each month, the 9 AM (local),Mountain Valley Net will come up on 5.373 (set your dial to 5.3715). Remember, 50 W ERP, USB only, max 2.8 KHz bandwidth. We will also make an effort to hold our Hospital Drills on this 5 MHz frequency. The backup will be 5348, dial setting of 5346.5.
Keep any event information coming to myself, Mike O'Dell (for the NNY website) and Rich Burns (PIO)
I am still looking for a volunteer for the section technical officer. A person who is RF knowledgeable and, as importantly, can interact with the public and the "powers that be" in local government and utilities. Any volunteers or nominations?
Last time I mentioned the subject of pager interference to amateur frequency communication in the north country. There was a lot of discussion regarding the topic at the last Section Meeting. Lacking a tech spec, I requested any specific info come through this office. I would act as a central clearing point, put the information into a report and forward it to HQ in Newington. I am very surprised and pleased to report the problem appears to have gone away right after the meeting. Must have - I received no information from anyone.
The NNYARA and NNY Staff will be holding a their next meeting on in Lake Placid, at the NNY Section Hamfest / Convention, in the presentation room. Due to NNYARA President Sanford Baers' sons football schedule Sanford has to leave directly after the main Hamfest activity, so the meeting will be rescheduled to Friday evening, after the Bar-B-Que. All are invited. NNYRA will meet first. This part of the meeting is open to all, the only requirement being an interest in the hobby, licensed or not. The Staff meeting is open, but only staff have direct input, although privilege of the floor may be granted.
If you have any concerns, queries, suggestions or comments regarding the ARRL or the hobby in general, please contact me via my e-mail, wb2kld@arrl.org or land line, 518 827 4800 (H, till 9PM) or 518 827 4852 (W). NORTHERN NEW YORK SECTION WEBPAGE
Well, we are past the peak off the summer season and the days are noticeably shorter. It seems there is barely enough time to do everything we want. One thing we should do is make sure our antenna farms, whatever the size, will withstand another NNY winter. Check those guy wires. Be sure all lines are properly tensioned and turnbuckles are properly secured against accidental separation. A drop or two of lube on the threads will not hurt either. Verify the integrity of your ground system. Plenty of thunderstorm potential before frost. For you folks "in the outback" mark your guy-wires well so an errant snow sledder or 4-wheeler doesn't run into them.
Now is also a good time to think about "firing up your club" after the summer doldrums. It is a great time to take up my Christmas In July Challenge. Let every one of us, between now and our countries next birthday, vow to bring at least one person into the world of amateur radio. Get them interested, guide them through the licensing process by one-on-one mentoring (or run a class), then help them get on the air, take part in public service events, work DX, participate in contests, do the digital modes, OSCARs or whatever or where ever interests may take them. Imagine, not having problems finding enough people for the next ice storm, tinman, fly-in or.... We could double the amateur radio and ARRL Membership population in under one year! Think about it - NNY at the forefront demonstrating the practicality of the next ARRL Membership Campaign! Please, do not depend on the other guy. We ALL need to take part in this challenge! Speaking of clubs - the club is the lifeblood of this hobby. It is a great way for you to pay it forward. Does your club qualify as a Special Service Club? You might be surprised! Do you want to know more? Check out the information at the ARRL Website. Have a club officer check for full details about SSC Designation and the benefits for your group!
Join us on Saturday mornings on 3955 KHz at 0900 local for the NNY callup. On the third Saturday of the month, we try it on 5 MHz. If Saturday is no good, try Sunday on 3958 KHz at 0830 local.
Just a reminder: At the NNY meeting in Plattsburg, the group indicated they would not support 60 Meter contest or DX-peditions and that, in an effort to support emergency communication operations when 80 or 40 Meters don't do the job or VHF doesn't have the range, the NNY Section will make an effort to drill on 60 Meters and hold a net there at least once per month. Thanks for all the Field Day Reports! Keep any event information coming to myself, Mike O'Dell (for the NNY website) and Rich Burns (PIO)
It's recruiting time folks! The section needs a technical officer. A person who is RF knowledgeable and, as importantly, can interact with the public and the "powers that be" in local government and utilities. Any volunteers, candidates or nominations?
At the NNY meeting this past Saturday (Rich - thanks for hosting)there was considerable discussion regarding communication difficulties caused by pager and cell system RF and excessive deviation in various parts of the section. Seems like everyone thought it was "just a local situation and we will have to live with it because complaints to the system operator have done no good". Folks, this is WRONG. However, to have any hope of clearing up the issue, all this info must be well documented as I described, filed with a central clearing point (first job for the technical specialist), or, until then, me. Then we can take the information to the next level - 225 Main Street, 06111.
The NNYARA and NNY Staff will be holding a their next meeting on 6 October in Lake Placid, at the NNY Section Hamfest / Convention, in the presentation room after the VE Exams. All are invited. NNYRA will meet first. This part of the meeting is open to all, the only requirement being an interest in the hobby, licensed or not. The Staff meeting is open, but only staff have direct input, although privilege of the floor may be granted.
Congratulations to Sanford Baer, KC2IDX as the next President of NNY ARA

NORTHERN NEW YORK SECTION WEBPAGE
Hello to all in the NNY Section and all guests to this page.
It seems I can open this months column with the same header, "Much has happened in our hobby since I last posted here."
As of the 23rd of this past month, Element 1, International Morse Code, is no longer required for an amateur radio license. Gone officially, but, I suspect, not forgotten as many folks will continue to favor the original narrow bandwidth digital mode. The mode will continue to be a presence on our frequencies well into the future.
Along those lines, many thanks for the fine job by our NNY Section Public Information Coordinator, Rich, NT2W. He got the word out regarding the licensing change to both print and RF based media throughout the Section. We were both interviewed by various media outlets. Thanks also to the media for the complimentary and informative stories they produced.
I have been asked by the folks at the Eastern VHF/UHF Conference to pass along that the group will be holding their 33rd conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Enfield, CT on the 20 - 22 of April, 2007. www.newsvhf.com Have you every wondered about these frequencies, techniques and equipment? Paul Wade, W1GHZ, the UHF Editor for QST, will be presenting a special seminar "Microwave for Beginners". Having known Paul since we were newly licensed high school aged hams belonging to the Central Jersey VHF Society (...to explore frequencies which few have dared to fathom...), I know Paul can explain things in an understandable way. Paul always enjoyed the microwave frequencies - he considered 6 meters a "DC" band, best used for arranging schedules for "sensible frequencies" like 432, 1296 and 5650 MHz!
The March QST will have a special pullout section pertaining to the recent licensing changes, including a nice frequency chart and Considerate Operators Frequency Guide. That is a nice operating aid for helping to observe the "Gentlemans Agreement" band sub divisions.
Roger, KA2JXI informed me of a new repeater, using his call, in the North Country. The machine is located on Kimble Mountain, near Russell, NY. It is a UHF machine, operating on 443.525+ with a PL of 151.4 Hz. Early operation indicates a fairly good coverage range. Check it out when you are in the vicinity.
Those of you who are on the section e-mail list sponsored by the League have seen this but others have not, soooo- On the 23 - 25 of March I will be representing all the amateurs of the NNY Section at the Atlantic Division Leadership Conference in Gettysburg, PA. Please, do so in advance, allowing me sufficient time so that I can prepare a summary sheet for the other attendees.
I want to be sure you noted the real meaning of my comment "representing all the amateurs" in the above paragraph. Yes, indeed, the ARRL represents its' members before the "Powers That Be", both in Washington as well as the various international radio treaty organizations, but, by default, ALL the radio amateurs of our country. Therefore, I ask you, if you are not a League Member, pray tell, why not. (I would like to bring that information to the conference also!)
After the conference I will prepare a summation for your information.
If you are not on the section e-mail list, please consider contacting the League to put yourself on it since it is the fastest way for me to get information to the whole section at once. Thanks.

The next scheduled NNY and NNYARA meeting is scheduled for April, 14 at the airport in Plattsburgh starting at 1100 local time. I hope to have the July Meeting in either Watertown or Ogdensburg.
Looking to the future I plan on visiting the all clubs in our section, affiliated and non-affiliated alike, in the spirit of the NNYARA. All I need is for the club activity coordinator to invite me.
On that note, call me at 518 827 4800 (H) up until 9 PM. Work is 518 827 4852. The local machine is 146.01/146.61 pl 123 WA2ZWM at Cobleskill.

NORTHERN NEW YORK SECTION WEBPAGE
Hello to all in the NNY Section and all guests to this page.
Much has happened in our hobby since I last posted here.
The awaited refarming of the Novice Frequencies and realignment of SSB and CW frequencies seemed to have actually gone rather smoothly when the big day came. There will be some need of some operating habit adjustment and the FCC will be doing some "fine tuning".
The next "big happening" was the announcement that the USA will finally be joining many other countries in eliminating testing in Morse Cose as a licensing requirement. Maybe the FCC wanted to observe the results of "no code HF licensing" in other countries before doing so here? Overall, it appears doing so has been positive for the hobby in those countries. I believe it will be likewise here.
That said, we here in the USA sometimes display a degree of independent thinking not seen elsewhere. I urge all to maintain an open and positve outlook. CW may go away as a licensing requirement but it will not go away as a mode. Indeed, we may see hear more CW, both from "preserve the mode" CW devotees and from those that choose to use the mode now that they are not "forced" to. I believe that dropping Element 1 will be good for our hobby. Folks who were attracted to amateur radio but, for whatever reason, perhaps repeater boredom, perhaps not being able to "work the world", dropped by the wayside may be encouraged to come back. Those who saw CW as a roadblock to upgrading or even entering the hobby at all, may now be encouraged to get their license. We who are licensed, particularly those of Gemeral, Advanced or Extra Class, must, I believe, adopt a "Triple A" mindset to the anticipated wave of new HF operators.
ACCEPT - those who are new to the HF frequencies. Make them welcome. Remember, we were all new once. We made newbie errors too. No person enters a new phase of the hobby "fully educated". Help those wishing to gain licensing. Be an Elmer. Teach, if not a class, an individual. If we each help one person getlicensed and active, the hobby has doubled. What a great growth potential! And, accept that change happens - only a grave is static.
ACCOMODATE - do whatever you can to help the newcomer.
ADJUST - yes, there may be times the bands will seem crowded, what with new licensees and the upswing of the sunspot cycle. Yes, someone will need helpful and courtieous guidance. There will probably new operators or possibly new modes to work with. Remember, no individual or group "owns a frequency". So what if your net or ragchew group has used X.XXX MHz since Filo Farnsworth was a young boy. Modern radios have a dial, they are frequency agile. Look at it as an opportunity to try 10, 12, 17, 30 or 160 MHz, or even VHF SSB.
NEW APPOINTEE The new NNY Section PIC (Public Information Coordinator) is Mr. Richard Burns, NT2W. Rich and his family hail from Potsdam. He brings to the position professional experience in public relations and information dissemenation. I believe he is highly qualified to present our hobby to the public and "powers that be". Richard, welome aboard. Thank you and thanks for your family encouraging you to accept the post.
The 7th Annual NNYARA Hamfest is scheduled for 6 October (Saturday) of Columbus Weekend, 2007. The venue will again be the Horse-Show Grounds in Lake Placid, NY. BBQ Friday night.
